Happy March! Thank you to Amy and Natasha for sharing some of the ideas in this month’s newsletter. Here are a few ideas to inspire you to save this month! (By the way, some of the ideas from friends not appearing this month are likely to appear in future newsletters!)
BIRTHDAY PARTIES
Picking up where I left off last month…Here are a few ideas from some of my friends about b-day parties.
Amy suggests the following If you still want to host the party outside the home, plan for a time that lunch or dinner will not need to be provided (between 2-4pm). The only food provided is cake and/or ice cream.
If you have young children, consider starting parties with friends when your child turns 5 or 6. Another idea is to host a party with friends every other year (this is a popular idea I heard from several friends).
Natasha shared that this year she’s giving party attendees a book instead of a goody bag. This will provide children with something wonderful to enjoy while reducing toys going home (later to be found on the floor).
One way the Buschmans save on Peter’s party is we host it at our neighborhood pool. Our primary expense is the pool pass (which if you invite neighborhood children you usually don’t incur this expense). Another family shared they also have a pool birthday party. Essentially for about $50, you can provide cake, drinks, goody bags and pool passes. So, if you have a child with a Spring or Summer birthday, consider waiting to have the “friend party” until your pool opens.
When we lived in Atlanta, many Chic-fil-a and McDonald restaurants had indoor playlands. These were popular party spots for children 6 and under. At such a party, you pay for a “happy meal” and you have both the food and take-home prize all in one. Bring a cake, and you are set. Of course, you need to contact the restaurant manager ahead of time to learn about party rules (ex: cake rules). Consider this venue since it involves little/no clean up.
Last but not least, I’ll share that we’re having Anna Rae’s tea party birthday this year in our home. That’s right! We’re having a party at our house. This used to be common when we were kids. We’re embracing the “retro” idea (which happens to be VERY inexpensive) in hopes that others follow.
March Shopping
Here are some deals to consider if you must shop! (Toss catalogues before you open them and avoid temptations to shop!)
Consignment Sales: Here in VA, Calvary Road Baptist Church is having their sale on the weekend of 3/25. Start watching local churches for sales this Spring.
Natasha told me about Paddington Station. They only take nice quality (like new) clothes, but the price you get in return is great. It does require $5 a year fee to consign. Also, if they don’t sell your items after 2 or 3 months, they will give them to charity for you unless you don’t want them to (and give you an itemized receipt). This store only takes seasonal merchandise (the current season), and it takes a bit to get an appointment. It is also a great place to shop for things that you want in like new condition and for gifts. The prices are not as cheap as thrift stores and garage sales, but the quality is great and it is cheaper than new.
Clothing Orchard: If you live in Northern VA, Immanuel Bible Church is hosting its semi-annual Clothing Orchard on March 17-18. This is a time when you can donate clothing, household items, and toys. You can come to the event and obtain FOR FREE a bag of such items. Basically, you can come get clothing for your children to wear this next season and it won’t cost you a dime. There are great items for adults, too. So, beef up your wardrobe. The exciting part of this event is that the entire Springfield/Annandale community is invited to come on 3/18. Thus, the church uses the event to share the gospel while helping folks with physical needs (clothing, toys, etc.). Michele will be there! Email me if you want details (or if you are outside VA and want to organize a similar event at your church).
Oriental Trading Company: If you have not discovered this on-line and catalogue shopping extravaganza, you should! Inexpensive items for parties, church crafts, school events, etc.
Pepperidge Farm Thrift Store: I was there this week. On Thursday, 3/16, the Springfield, VA store is receiving a new shipment of frozen food. Stop by this weekend for great deals!
****REMINDER—- I am available to speak on the topic of frugal living, budgeting, personal finances, etc. Let me know if you have a church or civic group that’s interested! I can also offer you and your friends a personalized seminar on the topic of frugal living and budgeting. Thank you to those of you who have inquired about my book, Face of Courage. I’m having a lot of fun telling folks about my book and sharing in this ministry!
Joy to you!
